6 Healthy Foods With Hidden Calories

While it’s important to enjoy everything in moderation, keep an eye out for these 6 famously healthy foods that are surprisingly high in calories:

1. Fruit juice

We have long been told that fruit juice was the healthy alternative to soft drink, but alas, we were misled. While some fruit juices are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, they can also contain high levels of fructose, which can be damaging to your liver. Opt for a whole piece of fruit over a glass of OJ to satisfy your cravings.

2. Frozen yoghurt

It’s the latest craze, but it seems that this latest go-to dessert isn’t the healthier cousin of ice-cream that we first thought. In fact, some frozen yoghurts contain a similar amount of calories as regular ice-cream. A tip to remember is this: fat-free doesn’t mean sugar-free.

3. Cereals

Breakfast of those champions, right? Well, sadly, not always. Corn flakes is an old favourite, but the recommended serving size of 35g can contain over 100 calories. It’s the pointless sugar-filled ‘empty’ calories that will not only cause weight gain, but also give you a sugar rush that will leave you wanting more.

4. Smoothies

Often marketed as a healthy alternative, these smoothies can sometimes be a calorie-packed ticking time bombs. Something to keep in mind is that while hidden under the guise of ‘fat free’, some smoothies contain a whopping 2000+ kilojoules which is a meal in itself.

5. Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is packed with more antioxidants than milk and white chocolate, but moderation is still key with this one. A good tip is that not all dark chocolates are created equal, so you want to be snacking (in moderation) on one that is at least 70% cacao.

6. Pre-prepared salads

You think you are making the healthy choice, but never assume that just because it’s labelled a ‘salad’ that it is packed full of the good stuff. Often, pre-packaged salads are loaded with hidden calories, particularly from their high mayonnaise content. We suggest preparing your own, like this delicious smoked chicken and roast pumpkin salad.

So you’ve read this and realised you’ve unwittingly committed serious calorie sin this week? Stay calm, we’ve got the perfect workout to help you burn those excess kilojoules.
