Tips On Successfully Working From Home

Are you struggling to efficiently and productively work from home? You’re not alone… far from it actually! In the initial phase, working remotely is no easy feat - there are so many darn distractions! But don’t worry, we’ve got your back (and your brain) with these expert tips and tricks that will help turn you into a productivity powerhouse!

Maintain routine

For those who thrive on structure and routine, now is more important than ever to maintain consistency. Even though you might be saving time you would have previously spent commuting, it doesn’t give you an excuse to fall into the habit of sleeping in until 8:50am and rolling onto your first zoom call at 9am with the camera off. Set an alarm for the same time everyday, do some exercise, have a shower and get changed out of your pyjamas. This routine will help you maintain purpose during this period and help you establish a positive and successful mindset for the rest of the day.

Separate a workspace

Designate a workspace that’s separate from the leisure parts of your home so you stay mentally focused and less distracted. Don’t set yourself up in the living room if you know you’re going to get distracted by the TV or in a communal area if other people are home. This will also help you switch on and off from your workday, so you can still maintain boundaries when you’re out of hours.

Set break times

If you normally take lunch breaks and tea breaks at the office, your home work day shouldn’t be treated any differently. Sitting at the computer all day isn’t great for your eyesight, and it’s easier to lose track of time when you’re working from home, so make sure you set reminders on your phone or in your email calendar to get up, stretch your legs, get some fresh air outside and have meal breaks.

Communicate with co-workers

Whether it’s a quick video call in the morning to set your agenda and get on the same page, or a chat group where you can maintain conversation throughout the day, open and regular communication is key to working remotely. Successful team work relies on your collaborative efforts so don’t just assume you’re on the same page and working towards the same deadlines and KPI’s. Initiate and over communicate!

Be kind to yourself

Any new routine is going to take some time to get used to, so be kind to yourself while you adapt to a new schedule and new way of working. Don’t punish yourself for getting distracted by a youtube video or by hanging out the washing if it’s not a scheduled break time. Acknowledge it, and then get back to work.
