How To Get The Most Out Of A Group Fitness Class

Group fitness classes can be a really fun and motivating way to exercise and find your way on a health and fitness journey. It can also be a little daunting if you’ve never tried a class before! Luckily most group instructors will welcome you with a warm smile before they have you moving around and the majority of group fitness fans are there because they love training with other people and you’ll feel at home in no time. Keep reading to discover 6 top tips for getting the most out of your group fitness class.

1. Match a group to your goal

With an abundance of choice from barre to boxing, grit strength to meditation, hot yoga to cycle and everything in between, it’s easy to match your goals to a group fitness class. Focus on your fitness goal and then find a class that will help you reach it – for example, if your goal is to increase your cardio fitness, a cycle, HIIT or grit cardio class may be better suited than a meditation or pilates class. But if you are looking for a stress release, a way to unwind or to improve your flexibility, then meditation, tai chi, yoga or pilates will help you do just that.

2. Explore your options – find a class that works for you

Don’t be afraid to try a number of different classes and find one – or more – that you enjoy and would like to join on a more regular basis. You’re more likely to continue doing something that you enjoy than something you see as a chore or dislike, so find a group training class that works for you.

3. Find a friend to be accountable to

There are a number of benefits to training with a buddy, including accountability, motivation, some friendly competition, support and the fun factor, so why not find a friend who is also looking to improve their fitness and join a group class together. Joining with a friend is also a great way to take the first class nerves away!

4. Attend regularly

Attending a group fitness class regularly, will not only improve your fitness levels but you’ll get a confidence boost as you know what to expect in the session and know you can achieve it. Before long you’ll find that exercise becomes a habit rather than something you ‘have’ to do!

5. Pick your position wisely

Are you a hide at the back of the class type of person? Or are you challenged more when you are up amongst it with nowhere to hide and encouraged by the energy levels of others there with you? There is nothing wrong with jumping on the wave of other people’s energy and a great place to do that is in a group exercise class – and it’s likely that you’ll find yourself working a little harder to keep up, not to mention having fun with others doing the same as you. Give it a go.

6. Aim high

If you’re happy in your comfort zone nearer the back of the class, find someone in the class that you aspire to train like. Once you’ve found them, keep an eye on them and aim to keep up with them during the session. Push through when you would usually take a rest and rest when they do instead – aim high and reach your next fitness level.
