3 Healthy Habits To Adopt Everyday

So often the word habit is laced with negative connotations, but did you know that habits can be healthy too? They say it takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so stick with these 3 healthy habits to adopt every day and see if you can make them part of your daily routine!

Don’t multitask during meals

Hands up how many of you seem to constantly find yourselves having lunch at your desk or sitting down to dinner in front of the TV? In this busy day and age when we have so many deadlines and distractions, eating can sometimes feel like an inconvenience. But instead of mindlessly munching away while watching Netflix, take your dinner to the table and learn to practice mindful eating so you can focus on your food and enjoy it. Smell it, notice the textures, put your fork down between bites and really savour it. Mindful eating has a multitude of benefits including improved digestion, reduced cravings, increased enjoyment and can even help prevent you from overeating. Try it next time!

Aim for 10K steps per day

We all have that one friend who is obsessed with tracking their step count on their Apple Watch, but did you know that 10K steps per day is the amount health professionals actually recommend? While 10K seems like a daunting number, especially for those of us who have desk jobs, there are lots of simple things you can do to help increase your step count. Get up every hour and do a lap around the office, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to the shops instead of driving, hop off the bus a stop or two earlier or sneak in a 30-minute walk where you can. The Heart Foundation says walking can help increase energy levels, clear your mind, reduce stress and help build stronger muscles and stronger bones.

Adopt the attitude of gratitude

Raise your hand if you find yourself reaching for your phone as soon as you wake to check your notifications? As soon as you see the long list of unread emails or calendar that’s full of meetings, your body's cortisol levels start to rise and you’re starting your day with stress, which is hard to shake. Instead, open your eyes and think about 1-3 things you’re truly grateful for. It could be your supportive partner, delicious hot cup of coffee or job you love getting up and going to. While it’s inevitable we will all have hard and frustrating days, getting into the habit of dedicating time each day to cultivate gratitude and positivity, you’ll slowly begin to notice how much there truly is in your life to be thankful for.
