Losing weight and improving fitness is never easy, and Daniel’s journey is proof of the dedication and effort it takes to make a lasting change. Starting at 146kg, he faced challenges but remained committed to better nutrition, consistent training, and personal growth.
In this Q&A, Daniel shares his experiences, struggles, and key takeaways from his weight loss journey.
What specific goals did you set out to achieve when you began?
Having reached almost 150kg in body weight, my movements became slow and I was short on breath while doing simple tasks with minimal movement. I set out to do the following:
Learn about healthy food choices
Increase my stamina
Improve my physical strength
With the above in mind, I was able to re-work my entire lifestyle and lose 50kg over the last 22 months.
How has working with a Personal Trainer changed your approach to fitness?
I found Marcus when I joined Goodlife back in December 2023 last year; I was around the 120-125kg weight range at this point. It was here that I decided to become serious about training and getting the best performance out of my body that I could.
Working with Marcus over the last year has been incredibly rewarding; our sessions are an opportunity for me to participate in unfamiliar exercises which promote movements that my body isn’t used to. Additionally, it’s an opportunity to check in with my diet. It’s much easier to plan your meals ahead with healthy food choices when the information is readily available from a professional.
What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Even though I had already lost over 20kg, reality set in and I found myself unable to complete a few exercises that Marcus had planned for me. As Marcus learned about me during our first two sessions however, we began tailoring exercises such that they were achievable, but not too easy. Mastering these exercises meant the addition of more difficult exercises, and the introduction of HIRT (High-Intensity Resistance Training), or circuit training. Each week we timed the circuits and noticed a tremendous increase in fitness levels as I began to complete the circuits quicker and quicker each week.
Marcus and I have put together many goals over the past year, including body weight targets, strength training goals, and even sleep and rest targets; as a night shift operator who works 12-hour nights, the latter is particularly important for someone like me. By sticking to my diet, monitoring my food intake and energy output, and pacing myself in my daily life between workouts, Marcus and I have been able to maintain my fitness progress without compromising on sleep, nutrition or social life.
What physical or mental benefits have you noticed since starting?
The benefits are endless! I’m able to run over long distances again, brain fog is gone, my heart rate has slowed, I fit into my old clothes again, I’m stronger, more flexible, and have much more energy throughout the day! It’s a lot easier to go about daily life without carrying around all that extra baggage.
What would you say to someone considering personal training?
Definitely try it and see how you like it. Find the right trainer for you and communicate with them as much as you can. It may be uncomfortable at first if they give you tasks which you’re not used to, but that’s the idea at the end of the day; to push towards your goals and being able to do things that you never thought possible!
