5 Tricks To Resist Temptation

Temptation is the theme of the week on The Biggest Loser Australia and we’ve watched as the contestants’ commitment has truly been tested. White team member Sam Hailwood proved that you can’t put a price on your health when she walked away from $20,000. Then last night teams were tempted with power and delicious food, but for those that said no it was apparent that resisting temptation is easier said than done.

To help you on your way, we’ve rounded up the top 5 temptations you may encounter on your weight loss journey and, more importantly, how to beat them:

1. Temptation: “I’ve eaten well, so time for a treat”

Our bodies are sneaky and always want what they can’t have. Resisting temptation is hard, so sometimes it’s important to mix things up and try a different approach. Rather than sitting there willing yourself not to reach for that slice of cake, put it on the back burner. Make time for a gym session with friends, go for a run or have a piece of fruit. By the end, you will likely feel more in control and less likely to undo all of your hard work.

2. Temptation: “Snoozing through that workout”

Oh the snooze button. It can be hard to ignore the siren call of your toasty warm bed, but a morning workout is a great way to kick-start your energy and studies have shown you are less likely to fall off the healthy eating bandwagon if you do. Why not make an early AM Body Pump date with a friend? It’s easy to sleep through your alarm, but it isn’t so easy to bail on a gym buddy at the last minute.

3. Temptation: “I’ve had a rough day, I’m skipping the gym”

Bad days at work are hard and sometimes no amount of coffee will perk you up. But we’ve all heard the infamous, “exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy” movie line and well, it really is true. Sometimes a gym session is all you need after a rough day at work to sweat out the stress and give you a new positive outlook. Variety is important, so mix up your workout to stay motivated, interested and on track. To get you started, we suggest this 40 minute push/pull workout, inspired by The Biggest Loser plane pull challenge featured on episode 3 and 4!

4. Temptation: “Everyone is drinking…”

You don’t have to be sober-sally at parties in order to maintain your health kick. It’s all about moderation and healthy(ish) choices. If you want to have a few bevvies, we suggest vodka soda (a low calorie option). However knowledge is power so we have broken down the calories in a couple of the favourites for you to keep in mind:

- 1 x glass of red wine = 120 calories

- 1 x glass of sparkling wine = 100 calories

- 1 x beer = 156 calories

Ultimately, moderation is key and if you want to keep the night moving, why not try a water between each drink and stick to a maximum amount of drinks that won’t leave you feeling fuzzy-headed and in bed the following day.

5. Temptation: “I’ll start Monday”

There’s no time like the present. Today is as good as any to start your health and fitness journey, so avoid the temptation to delay your new workout routine with even the smallest of efforts like an afternoon walk with friends or a low-impact class like Pilates. A small amount of exercise and change in diet can quickly lead to an established routine and the path to a happier, healthier you!
