When it comes to food groups, carbs have copped a bad rep in the last few years, particularly when it comes to weight loss. With the recent rise of the popularity of diets like Atkins and Keto, we’ve been conditioned to believe that cutting carbs from your diet will lead to weight loss. But contrary to popular belief, carbs are not the enemy, in fact - far from it!
Carbs are an essential part of a healthy diet, particularly for those of us who hit the gym regularly. Carbs are our body’s main source of energy, and help us think, feel and perform at our best! But just like fats, there are healthy choices and not so healthy choices when it comes to selecting your carb source!
Wholegrains: Sourdough/wholegrain bread, brown rice, quinoa, oats, barley, millet
Fruit and veg: Banana, potato, sweet potato, beetroot, strawberries, apples, mango, corn
Legumes: Black beans, chickpeas, pinto beans, kidney beans, lentils
Not so healthy choices:
Sugary drinks: Soft drinks, fruit juices, cordials, energy drinks
Confectionery and sweets: Lollies, cupcakes, cookies, donuts, pastries, ice-cream, chocolate
Other: Chips, sugary cereals, frozen yoghurt
